Becoming parents was a dream for both Caitlin and Caitlin. After meeting and becoming friends, the pair talked about having children early on. A few years later, when they started exploring fertility treatment options, they heard about Thérapie Fertility through a mutual friend. “My name is Caitlin, and I’m from Belfast,” Caitlin begins.
“And I'm also Caitlin, and this is our son Finneas,” the other Caitlin continues, cradling their young son.
Their story began through a series of coincidences, connecting first by text message, later meeting in person, and soon becoming close friends. Eventually, they moved to Belfast to start their life together, always knowing that one day, they would become parents.
“We always knew we wanted children... even as friends, we spoke about having children together.”
After facing challenges with fertility clinics in Northern Ireland, Caitlin and Caitlin discovered Thérapie Fertility through a friend on Instagram.
Caitlin recalls: “I saw that there was a free nurse consultation and said, why don't we go for it?”
From there, their journey began. Within a few months, they had started treatment at the clinic.

“They were everything that we wanted. They were friendly to same-sex couples and the minute we walked through the door, we were just immediately at ease.”
Once they decided to move forward with treatment, Caitlin and Caitlin began their IVF journey. While it was a difficult year with setbacks and losses, they shared how supported they felt by the entire team at Thérapie Fertility.
“Even though it was the hardest year of our lives, we had a lot of setbacks and a lot of loss and everything. It was also the journey to conceiving Finn. So we look back really fondly.”
Caitlin also opened up about her personal fear of not feeling like a parent because she wasn’t the one who carried the pregnancy. That fear disappeared the moment she met their son.
“There was a fear that I had... would I feel valid as a parent when he was born? But then, there was no question of that. It was just instant. He's my son. It doesn't matter about who carried. Doesn't matter about whose egg it is.”
Having the support of the clinic’s fertility specialists made all the difference.
“After every stage, I thought we were out. And no, not a single staff member let me believe that.”
When asked what advice they would give to other same-sex couples or individuals considering fertility treatment, Caitlin and Caitlin emphasized the importance of holding on to hope.
“When you're really in it, you don't see a light at the end of the tunnel. You really don't. But there is always one. No matter how your journey ends or what it looks like, there is always light at the end of the tunnel. And it's so much brighter than you can think.”
