Take control of your future with Sperm Freezing at Thérapie Fertility

Freezing sperm is often considered for those who may be unable to produce sperm in the future due to medical or personal reasons. It’s also planned quite frequently for those who are having treatment but may not be present on the day of egg collection due to other commitments. For others, freezing sperm before a vasectomy leaves them with options should anything change in the future. And in some cases it is due to difficulty producing a semen sample or for those who may be more comfortable having a back up in place. Whatever your reasons, freezing your sperm gives you more options for the future.

The Sperm Freezing process

  • 01

    Sperm collection

Your sperm freezing process is carried out in our primary clinics in Dublin and Belfast. You will be given a sample pot and instructions by an embryologist. You will then be shown to a private sample room where you will need to produce a semen sample via masturbation.

It is important that anyone providing a sample for sperm freezing have a period of abstinence for 2 to 4 days prior to the collection. Ideally, you should have regular ejaculation in the lead up to this appointment to optimise your sample. If this is not possible, that's no problem.

  • 02

    Sperm freezing

Once you have produced your sample, you will pass it through to the embryology team, directly across from the sample room. The semen sample is then washed, analysed and processed, it will be frozen that day and stored on site in our cryostorage facilities. These are liquid nitrogen tanks kept at ultra-low temperatures, ensuring your sperm is kept safely until you are ready to use it in the future.
