Transgender Fertility Care

Treating you with sensitivity and compassion

Fertility treatment in the UK has traditionally been a space that has not been open to people who aren’t cis-gendered. While there have been many advances in recent years, with same-sex couples and single women undergoing treatment becoming commonplace, there is still a huge amount of uncertainty for transgender and non-binary people wishing to undergo fertility preservation or treatment. At Thérapie Fertility, we believe that fertility preservation or treatment is something that should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their gender identity.

Understanding more about transgender fertility care

with our Medical Director Dr. John Kennedy

Who is transgender fertility care suitable for?

Fertility preservation and/or treatment has traditionally been a taboo subject for the transgender community. We believe that all transgender people should have information about their fertility and the opportunity to preserve their fertility prior to transitioning. Transitioning is an important step for most trans people; however, it usually has implications for fertility.

The first step for anyone considering their future fertility is testing, which may include hormone blood tests, and an ultrasound or semen analysis, as appropriate. Once these results are available, they will be made available to you on your portal. At your follow up medical consultation, your fertility consultant can explain what it all means and will discuss with you what the right next step for you might be.

We believe that all transgender people should have information about their fertility and the opportunity to preserve their fertility prior to transitioning, if this is something they want. Transitioning is an important step for most trans people; however, it usually has implications for fertility.

What fertility options do I have as a transgender person?

Fertility preservation is open to transgender and non-binary people in the same way as it is to cis-gendered people. There can however, be much more nuanced reasons for preserving fertility prior to medical transitioning or hormone therapy treatment. If a patient chooses to freeze their eggs or sperm, these can then be used in the future in an IVF or ICSI cycle.

  • Transgender male patients or non-binary people assigned female at birth can choose to undergo testing and fertility options available to people with eggs and/or a uterus
  • Transgender female patients or non-binary people assigned male at birth can choose to undergo testing and fertility options available to people producing sperm.
